Cavendish Hotel

This former coaching inn, with 28 bedrooms, lies at the heart of the Chatsworth Estate –the home of perhaps one of England’s most extraordinary country houses. Acquired by the estate in the 1830s, this hotel has long brought visitors and the existing local community together and is deeply connected to the Devonshire family. Chatsworth House’s chatelaine, Lady Burlington, tasked us to reimagine the space, honouring the rich history of the hotel, while introducing refined, modern touches. The process began with a deep-dive into Chatsworth House’s archives – family photographs, books filled with botanical drawings and lampshades found in the attic all provided rich inspiration for how we approached it. We redesigned the public spaces, including the restaurant, lounges and Garden Room, introducing a warm, earthy palette, layered with bespoke furnishings – including lampshades made from old fire hydrants found in the attics at Chatsworth – and curated artwork. The bedrooms are all individual, combining antiques with hand-printed wallpapers. A palette of creams and sages connect seamlessly to the Derbyshire countryside. Our design aimed to bridge past and present, ushering this former coaching inn into its next chapter as a unique countryside escape immersed in history.
