Edward Bulmer & Nicola Harding: NiX Furniture ‘Spring Fling’ Pop-up

Edward Bulmer & Nicola Harding: NiX Furniture ‘Spring Fling’ Pop-up

The Spring Fling

The Spring Fling between NiX & Edward Bulmer Natural Paint is in its final day – we’ve had a riotous couple of weeks.

Dubbed ‘The Classicist’ (Edward Bulmer) and ‘The Maverick’ (Nicola Harding) the two interiors masters danced with each other’s differing perspectives and shared approaches; discussing topics as far reaching as craftsmanship and the preservation of British skills alongside British interior design: from the classical to the contemporary.

Sustainability and the importance of living amongst natural materials was a key component for both, and most of all, the rules of colour: when to flout and when to observe them: how to navigate ‘tricky’ colours in your interiors, what to choose for tricky rooms and how to handle tricky marital disagreements when it comes to choosing colours (!).

These discussions will no doubt continue.

If you didn’t make it to the Edward Bulmer Natural Paint Showroom in Pimlico when we popped up, take a tour of the highlights below and see our highlight on Instagram for more.

A special thank you to Branch Arts (@branch_arts) and Gerrish Fine Art (@gerrishfineart) for providing beautiful and interesting artwork and Christine Vanderhurd (@vanderhurd) for her stunning rugs.

Not just a regular pop-up

During the two week fling, we co-hosted two events with the Edward Bulmer team: an invite-only interior designer’s breakfast for our NiX trade members; and a colour masterclass for anyone interested in interiors and how to approach colour in their home, which sold out in under 12 hours.

Amidst Edward Bulmer’s natural, richly painted walls we sat comfortably on organic cotton, British-made NiX pieces handcrafted in bespoke upholstery combinations carefully chosen by Nicola.

Two Perch Slipper Chairs had been upholstered in customised NiX fabric pairings. Idler sofas hosted our guests comfortably, and the Hither and Thither upholstered ottomans completed the set, providing flexible seating and vital space to set down a coffee.

An abundance of lamps dotted across the space transformed it from showroom to home. Key pieces of furniture including our Gather Round solid oak dining table (used for meetings held in the Edward Bulmer conservatory) and slim Keepsake Console Table (on which brush out boards of Edward’s paint colours were placed) provided a practical grounding to the homely, contemporary British scheme.

“A home is far more than what it looks like, it’s what it feels like. Natural colours and tones are a conduit to mother nature, they speak to a deeper part of our psyche and make us feel reassured. Earth pigments were used to paint wall art in caves - we have always had a desire to decorate and keep nature close to us, regardless of history, regardless of our surroundings.”

“Checks and stripes manage to create an easy, ‘back-of-house’ relaxed vibe, that brings reassurance and feelings of comfort. I love how stripes and checks can be blended together in complementary yet unexpected colour combinations. They relax the eye, where plain fabrics can feel “blocky” and demanding. I often lean towards highly detailed organic cotton ticking fabrics and complex stripes to add depth to my interiors. If you look closely you will see unusual combinations.”
