Behind the design: the story of our ceramic lamp bases

Ditsy, the latest addition to our lighting collection, is already proving itself to be a particular favourite among our customers. As well as its compact footprint – perfect for those tricky spaces where a typical table lamp would be too big – its glossy ceramic base that catches the light lends it a bold character despite its diminutive size.

At Nicola Harding & Co, we have long-used ceramic lamp bases to inject colour and texture into our interior projects, so including them in our debut lighting collection seemed an obvious choice. Our first creations, the Ditsy lamp base and the Bright Spark wall lamp, make a bold statement with their captivating glossy glazed finish. These pieces effortlessly complement our tall tapered paper lampshades, available in a range of sophisticated hues such as burgundy, mustard, soft white, and natural parchment.

As our collection grew, October marked the exciting expansion of our offerings. Introducing new dimensions and fresh colour palettes, we proudly present the Humbug, Orb, Hourglass, and Comet table lamps. Each piece is designed to add scale, character, and a touch of modern elegance to your living spaces.

“I have always been drawn to ceramics,” says our founder, Nix. “I love the depth of colour and the way they catch the light. In particular, glazed ceramic lamp bases are a wonderful way to add colourful accents.”

Our glazed lamp bases were developed in collaboration with ceramics experts in Portugal at a factory that Nicola Harding & Co has a longstanding relationship with. Each base is slip cast in an expertly made mould. Reactive glazes are then sprayed, dipped or painted onto the surface to create various textures.

Choosing shades that would work together with our wider collection of furniture, upholstery and textiles was an exacting process that required Nix’s sharp eye. Drawing on the factory’s 40+ years of experience producing glazes, Nix was able to fine tune colour, texture, feel and warmth.

“I’m so proud to be able to make everything in the UK and Portugal using an established network of skilled craftspeople with whom I have developed long-standing relationships over many years,” she says. “Each piece is crafted using responsibly sourced materials and is made to be well-used and well-loved across several lifetimes.”

Our ceramic lamp bases provide colourful punctuation points within an interior scheme, especially when paired with a contrasting lampshade – the olive green base and burgundy shade of the Ditsy Collection is a NiX customer favourite, as is sea blue and mustard.

Indeed, the beauty of the NiX lighting collection is that it offers you the ability to mix and match bases and lampshades to create custom combinations. Altogether, the collection comprises of 14 variations of ceramic lights that can be combined with 26 different shades to provide practical and beautiful illumination. In addition, the varying sizes of the lamps in the collection allow you to play with scale and placement within a room. The possibilities are endless.
